ECCA-Makan
The Egyptian Center for Culture and the Arts, ECCA-Makan, is a non-profit corporation based in Cairo. The corporation aims to provide a vibrant home to traditional arts, particularly music, which is increasingly threatened by mass pop culture and music. To fulfill this goal, ECCA-Makan plays host to workshops between and among Egyptian, regional, and international musical groups, thus contributing to intercultural artistic dialogue and encouraging musical innovation on hitherto unexplored levels. In order to strengthen the academic understanding of traditional music, ECCA-Makan documents and records all parts of the creative process, from instrument-making to rehearsal and performance. This material makes up ECCA-Makan’s vast archive, serving as the cultural memory of crafts that would otherwise be on the verge of extinction. ECCA-Makan also presents traditional music to a wide audience, in a setting both intimate and respectful of its subject.
